| You May Not Own Your Internet Domain Name So you registered a Domain name one that is as close to your business name as possible, you had a Web site created, it is being hosted on the Internet, you sent out all new business cards and mailings promoting that you have a Web site at www.mybusiness.com and your e-mail address is sales@mybusiness.com, and everything is Great right. Yep but wait until you have to change the location of your Web or e-mail host. You call the new host and have them make the changes only to find out that you are not the owner of your domain name. WHAT!!!!! that absurd it says mybusiness.com I had it registered, right! WRONG!!! you find that the person or company, or your web designer who did you a favor, it turns out is the owner and he (They) went out of business or you had a falling out a few months ago. The problem is since they are the listed owners to move or make any changes your domain name has to be authorized by them. So what happened, we have had 5 new clients that are in this bind. What they did not do was to make sure that their name was on the Domain registration record as the owner of mybusiness.com. Some web designers or registration companies will tell you that they will setup and register your domain name for a monthly fee (the monthly fee is an industry standard) but what you do not know is that they register your domain name and put themselves as the owner. Legal you bet, anything you can do about it, NOPE!!!!! If they are really good people they will change the record to your name as the owner, but they do not have to, because they considered that monthly fee rent of the domain name....... What can you do when you register a domain name. Use a reliable company and insist that the owner of the company and the company name is listed on the Domain record. Have them send you a copy of the record and then verify it yourself. You can do this by going to this link http://www.netsol.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois at Verisign and type in your domain name ie;mydomain.com. It should find your record and display all the information.
